Permanent Magnet Division to Be Formed Within SMMA

At the Fall Technical Conference of SMMA - The Motor & Motion Association, which took place Oct. 10, 2007 in Louisville, Ken., a group of magnet producers and magnetic distributors and fabricators voted to form a Permanent Magnet Division (PMD) as part of the SMMA organization.

The group intends that this organization will fill the void that occurred when the Permanent Magnet Division of the International Magnetics Association (IMA) discontinued their affiliation with IMA in 2006. The mission of this new SMMA division is to increase the understanding, promotion and effective utilization of magnetic materials, assemblies and systems for the benefit of the Permanent Magnet Division members and all users of permanent magnet products.

The next regular meeting of PMD will be at the SMMA’s Spring Management Conference, taking place May 7-9, 2008 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The PMD meeting will be held at 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. on May 7, 2008.  All interested members of the permanent magnet community are welcome to attend this meeting.

Encoder Technology from Timken Offers Alternative to Delicate Optical Sensors / Expensive Resolvers

Recently awarded the 2007 Frost & Sullivan award for innovation in motion control technology, the Timken MPS160, or advanced multiplying encoder ASIC, offers design engineers an alternative to delicate optical sensors and expensive resolvers. The fully integrated design features on-chip Hall sensors that provide optical encoder resolutions in a small, low-cost package.

The encoder ASIC offers flexibility for motor control circuitry in its ability to interface with external Hall sensors for communication. When used with the external commutation Hall devices, it provides absolute position over a SPI interface.

The ASIC provides quadrature signals at speeds up to 250k Hz/channel and offers a low power mode operation for lower speed applications. The robust encoder is also reliable at higher temperatures, shock loads and vibration levels.

New AC Motor from DynaMotors, Inc.

DynaMotors, Inc. has developed a patented, brushless AC motor that runs at variable speed by means of electronic switches embedded in the motor’s wound rotor. The DynaMotor develops high torque at low speed, which can simplify or eliminate mechanical components such as gear reducers, belt or chain drives. The DynaMotor does not use PWM switching and eliminates problems PWM creates such as RFI/EMI, poor bearing life due to ground currents and short insulation life. No filtering, shielded cabling or special installation techniques are required with the DynaMotor. The lack of ground current allows the DynaMotor to operate on GFCI protected circuits.

The DynaMotor has its control completely integrated into the motor. This reduces the complexity and cost of installation. Included in the control is a built-in encoder, enabling closed-loop speed control. The control is very simple, which leads to low cost.

IMS Gear Planetary Gears, Inc. – Focusing on the Future

The sales markets and their structures have changed dramatically over the past few years. Topics such as globalization, pressure of costs and wages, but also substantial changes in the product requirements for new sales markets had to be addressed by enterprises. As early as 1993, IMS Gear has taken the first step toward a fundamental realignment and has meanwhile evolved into a worldwide leading provider in gear engineering. With the renaming of the previous business division on January 1st, 2007 from “Technomotive” into “Planetary Gears”, another important step has been taken in the direction of the future market orientation. What does all this mean for our customers?

Planetary Gears – an activity of the IMS Gear Group
A core element of our vision is our concentration on selected fields of competence of gearwheel and gear engineering, to find problem solutions for our customers in their respective fields of operation. Our modular system for planetary gears is just one of several fields of competence of the IMS Gear Group.
To account for the focusing concept in this activity, it was found to be necessary in the course of the last years to gradually transform the “Technomotive” business division into a pure competence field under the name of “Planetary Gears”.

Concentration on standard planetary gears
By concentrating our capabilities on a few selected fields of competence such as “Planetary Gears“, we are now in a position to bundle the IMS Gear competences for the highly specific and profound further development of our standard planetary gears. By focusing we can adapt these competences to the fast changing requirements of our customers and markets. This speeds up the pace of development of products, but also of process innovations. This is our way of avoiding the latent risk of remaining “average” by diversifying the product line-up in many fields of technology.

Design of Experience
By firmly focusing on standard planetary gears, the concept of “design of experience” is given a new dimension.
Experiences gathered from customer applications and production processes can so be used extensively for advanced developments. For the customer, this not only means the certainty of always having the latest in product technology, but also the assurance that these products are made with innovative process technology at an excellent price-performance ratio.
