Heidenhain
www.heidenhain.com
Encoder Interface from Heidenhain Fast Than Ever
The EnDat 2.2 encoder interface from Heidenhain has doubled its clock frequency to 16 MHz for high-response applications with direct drives. The increase on this bi-directional fully digital interface significantly reduces the access time to the position value, thus making shorter cycle times possible. This means that EnDat 2.2 is now the fastest purely serial interface for position encoders, based on the RS 485 transmission characteristics.
The EnDat 2.2 interface yields significant savings in connection technology for the entire system as well as a reduction of required installation space in the machine. Since the analog scanning signals are digitized and subdivided directly at the place of measurement, characteristics of servo motors such as positioning accuracy and speed stability can be further improved. Along with the automatic self-configuration of encoders and drives in automation systems, the transmission of additional information, such as temperature, to the subsequent electronics is possible without additional wires. The online diagnostics capability of the interface ensures the availability of machines and facilities, and simplifies maintenance.
Semikron Intl.

First Intelligent Power Module For Solder-Free Assembly
Semikron will exhibit its intelligent power module for quick and easy solder-free assembly at the 2009 MD&A Systems Conference. The Miniskiip IPM is developed for motor power up to 15 kW and has a latch-up free SOI driver IC for reliable driving already integrated. This new IPM demonstrates the lowest thermal resistance of 0,95K/W and the highest junction temperature of 175°C. Power, control and auxiliary contacts are connected directly to the printed circuit board via springs, not solder joints. The elimination of any solder connections results in a higher quality of the assembly.
A high voltage driver IC with an advanced level shifter technology is integrated into the 600 V Converter-Inverter-Brake IPM and the 1200 V inverter (6-pack) Miniskiip IPM providing IGBT driving without an optocoupler. The SOI technology provides complete latch-up immunity since all switches are dielectrically insulated. The gate driver IC features an interlock to prevent cross-conductions, over-current protection, under-voltage lockout and fault signaling.
Using state-of-the-art Trench-Field-Stop IGBTs, the IPMs are available in 600 V and 1200 V, and designed for nominal current ratings up to 72 A. The module is RoHS compliant.

DC Link Film Capacitor from SBE, Inc.
SBE’s Power Ring Film Capacitor offers the inverter designer options to improve inverter performance. Integrating the power electronics, including the DC link capacitor, increases efficiency and reduces volume. The low profile Power Ring can be manufactured using a variety of core sizes to best meet specific dimensional requirements.
The circular design, and ability to integrate the capacitor with a custom bus structure, allows for maximum ripple current capability along with the lowest possible ESR and ESL theoretically attainable. In addition, the Power Ring is designed to handle extreme thermal environments. A patented method of segmenting the metal end-spray on the surface of the capacitor mitigates the differences in the CTE of the dielectric and metal spray. AiME - Association for International Motion Engineers
www.aime.net
AiME Changes Its Foucs
AiME, the Association of International Motion Engineers, has evolved from a strict focus on motion control to Mechatronics as a way to better serve our consituents both professionally and for the industries they serve.
AiME is an educational association which provides the capstone technology exchange that bridges the gap between mechanical and electronic systems. Formally, the industrial focus was found in precise motion control leaning towards applications in automation. That focus still exists, but a stronger emphasis of the mechanical side has been requested by those we serve. In the past, the mechanical side in motion control was hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical actuation of the system. AiME is adding, by request, additional mechanical actuation such as gears, belts, linkages, gear reducers and kinematic design into the organization’s course work.
AiME has a well established two-tier certification program. One as a Certified Motion Control specialist and the other as a Certified Technical Sales Specialist. AiME will continue to both offer and maintain those certification programs and records. Additionally, the AiME will be adding a Certified Mechatronic Specialist program in 2009. Courses reflective of the new certification program are being developed now. The instructors have been selected and are test marketing the course work. Many of the courses are enhanced versions of those already offered by AiME through its current motion control programs.
